RiverSing 2006

Walk into a rehearsal for The Halalisa Singers on any Monday night in Lexington Center and you may feel like you’ve just stepped into a foreign country. Each week the lower level choir room of the Hancock church resonates with songs from all around the world as the group of enthusiastic singers dedicate themselves to exploring the many types and genres of song form every corner of the planet.

In 1993, nationally acclaimed song leader and composer Nick Page founded The Halalisa Singers, creating an a cappella, mixed-voice singing group dedicated to the celebration of world music, honoring a wide variety of ethnic traditions from every corner of the world. Under Page’s direction the group performed in concert with the Mystic Chorale and with Jim Scott, founding member of The Paul Winter Consort.

In 2004, Mary Cunningham Neumann was named Artistic Director of The Halalisa Singers.  Under her direction the ensemble has recently taken their music around the Boston area in performances with the Revels Riversing in Cambridge,  “Lux Eterna” Tsunami Benefit at the Arlington Street Church in Boston, as well as at churches and retirement communities throughout the region. The group also has recently performed the Missa Gaia with composer Jim Scott at the RiverSing on the Blackstone folk music festival in Pawtucket Rhode Island and in Concord Massachusetts.
